About the Red-bellied Piranha

The red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a sleek, laterally compressed characid that can grow to 50 cm and 3.9 kg, though most individuals stay under 35 cm. Juveniles display a silvery body speckled with darker spots. The rest of the body is a muted gray, often flecked with silver, and the anal fin base is typically black. Fin coloration ranges from red to orange, and females can be spotted by a deeper red belly than the males. In the warm waters of the Amazon, Paraguay, Paraná and Essequibo basins, and in countless smaller streams, lakes, floodplains and flooded forests across Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, these fish form shoals that serve as a defensive shield against predators such as dolphins, caimans and large piscivorous birds. Though they travel in groups, they rarely hunt cooperatively; instead, they rely on opportunistic foraging, feeding on insects, worms, crustaceans, fish, fallen fruits, nuts, seeds, and even aquatic plants. A surprising trait revealed by research is their near-immunity to gas-bubble disease, a condition that devastates most co-occurring fish, giving them a hidden advantage in turbulent, oxygen-rich white-water habitats.
