• A European carp can live for over 50 years — longer than most dogs — and keep growing the entire time. The oldest confirmed carp on record was 38 years old when it died in a French lake, but anglers have documented individuals they believe exceeded 60. They never stop adding scales or muscle; a carp that weighs 9 kg at age 10 might weigh 27 kg by age 30. This endless growth means the biggest fish in any lake are almost always the oldest.
• European carp taste the water through their skin. They have taste receptors called chemoreceptors distributed across their entire body — not just in their mouth — giving them a sensory map of their environment like a living metal detector. A single taste bud can detect amino acids at concentrations of 1 part per billion; they can smell food in the water from 200 metres away. This is why carp fishing requires such careful bait selection: they're literally tasting you before they eat you.
• A carp's ears evolved from bones that once helped fish move from water to land. The Weberian apparatus — a chain of small bones connecting their swim bladder to their inner ear — amplifies sound vibrations and lets carp hear frequencies up to 1,000 Hz.
