• A prawn king's heart beats in its head — literally. Three chambered hearts pump blue blood (copper-based hemocyanin, not iron-based like ours) through a body that's 80% water. When stressed, they can flip their abdomen so hard they shoot backwards at 5 metres per second, a defence move that's saved countless prawns from predators in the split second before teeth close.
• Female prawn kings release 50,000 to 500,000 eggs in a single spawning, yet fewer than one in a million survive to adulthood. The larvae drift as plankton for 3 to 4 weeks, transforming through 11 distinct developmental stages before they ever look like prawns. Most are eaten. Those that aren't must find mangrove nurseries or die.
• A prawn king moults up to 20 times in its lifetime, splitting its shell completely and crawling out naked and soft. For hours it's defenseless — so it hides. The new shell, initially translucent, hardens and darkens over days. Each time they shed, they can grow up to 15% larger in a single moult.
• Prawn kings navigate coral reefs at night using chemoreceptors so sensitive they can detect a single amino acid molecule in an Olympic swimming pool. Their antennae are living bloodhound noses, allowing them to hunt in total darkness where their compound eyes are useless. They taste with their legs.
• In Southeast Asian fisheries, prawn king landings have collapsed by 60% since the 1990s due to trawling and mangrove destruction — the nurseries where young prawns grow. A single large female can produce enough offspring to sustain a fishing village, making their loss a broken food chain, not just an economic one.
