About the Blue Coral

Blue coral is a living fossil — the sole surviving member of an ancient lineage that predates the dinosaurs. Unlike most corals whose skeletons are white calcium carbonate, blue coral incorporates iron salts that permanently stain the skeleton a distinctive blue-violet colour. This colour persists even after death, making blue coral fragments immediately recognisable in fossil records and on beaches.
