• In less than a second, a mimic octopus can flatten its body, change its colour from red to white to brown, and morph its arm shape into tentacles — copying the exact appearance of a lionfish, sea snake, or jellyfish nearby. It doesn't just look like them; it moves like them too, swimming in the specific pattern of whichever predator would scare off whatever's hunting it. Scientists have watched a single individual impersonate 15 different species in one day, choosing which disguise based on what threat it faces.
• Unlike other octopuses that rely on camouflage instinct, the mimic octopus learns. Young ones are poor mimics; they get better with age and practice. A 2016 study showed they remember which mimics work against which predators and reuse them strategically — the first invertebrate ever documented adjusting behaviour based on experience with specific enemies.
• The mimic octopus has only 130,000 neurons in its entire brain — a fruit fly has 100,000 — yet it solves problems, opens childproof containers, and recognises individual humans in aquarium settings. Two-thirds of its neurons live in its arms, not its head, letting each arm think semi-independently while the central brain orchestrates the disguise. It's proof that intelligence doesn't scale with brain size.
• In the 1990s, it was unknown to science. The first specimen wasn't formally described until 1998 in Indonesia, making it one of the ocean's most recently discovered common animals. Before that, divers assumed they were seeing different species — which is exactly what the octopus wanted them to think.
• It hunts by changing into a harmless cuttlebone shape to drift close to prey, then strikes. But it also mimics predators of its prey: if a crab's natural enemy is a grouper fish, the mimic octopus becomes a grouper, causing the crab to panic and flee straight into the octopus's waiting arms. It weaponises fear, using its opponents' own instincts against them.
