About the Ibiza Wall Lizard

The Ibiza wall lizard, Podarcis pityusensis, is a compact, robust lacertid that rarely exceeds 7 cm (3 in) from snout to vent, its tail often twice that length. Its dorsal skin is typically a vivid green, though shades of grey or brown appear, accented by a pale dorso-lateral stripe and sometimes a line of dark spots along the spine. The scales are coarse and slightly keeled, giving the animal a rugged texture, while the underside ranges from white and cream to orange or pink, with throats that may be mottled with darker pigment. These lizards thrive in the temperate shrubland and Mediterranean-type vegetation of Ibiza and Formentera, but they are equally at home on rocky shores, arable fields, pastureland, and even in urban gardens where human structures provide shelter. They are most abundant on vegetated coastal rocks and small islets, where they can be seen darting among sun-warmed stones, their long tails flicking for balance as they chase prey. A primarily insectivorous diet sees them snapping up small invertebrates, especially ants when they swarm, while summer brings a shift toward vegetable matter. Females lay a single clutch of one to four eggs, which hatch in a few weeks into hatchlings about 3.2 cm (1.3 in) long; sexual maturity arrives at roughly one and a half to two years. A surprising trait is their adaptability to human-altered landscapes: they readily colonize gardens and pasture, exploiting the micro-habitats created by agriculture and urban development, a flexibility that has allowed them to naturalize beyond their native islands, even reaching mainland Spain.
