Pin-tailed Whydah

Fascinating facts about the Pin-tailed Whydah

• Breeding males are only 12-13 cm long, but the pennant-like tail of the adult male adds another 20 cm, giving a total length of about 32-33 cm when the tail is fully extended. The male's back and crown are black, and the tail is a strikingly long black banner that trails behind him in flight. Dark brown wings with white patches and white underparts contrast with the vivid red bill, making the bird appear larger than its compact body suggests.
• A male pin-tailed whydah establishes and defends a small territory that he shares with several females, forming a tight group. This territorial behaviour allows him to maintain access to multiple mates and the resources within his area. The group structure is typical for the species, with the male's presence central to the cohesion of the small flock. Such social organisation supports his breeding success across the grassland and savannah habitats he favours.
• During the breeding season the male performs an elaborate courtship flight that includes hovering directly over a female while fanning his exceptionally long tail. This aerial display showcases the tail's length and colour, acting as a visual signal to attract the female's attention. The hovering manoeuvre is repeated several times, reinforcing the male's suitability as a mate. Such a display is a key component of the species' reproductive ritual.
• The pin-tailed whydah has been introduced far from its native range and now maintains a sizable population in southern California. It is also established on islands such as Puerto Rico and in Singapore.
• A male pin-tailed whydah delivers its song from a high perch, where the clear, rapid squeaking and churring can be heard across the grassland. This vocal display is part of the male's territorial routine, which often involves defending a small area that includes several females. The distinctive sound helps maintain his position within the group and signals his presence to both mates and rivals.
