• After 17 years underground, a Pharaoh cicada nymph triggers its emergence by sensing a soil temperature of exactly 17.8°C — a biological thermometer so precise it syncs millions across entire forests to emerge on the same night. Within hours, a forest floor erupts with trillions of insects, their synchronized molting creating a blizzard of shed skin.
