• The beetle's scientific epithet capreolus comes from Latin and translates as "little goat", a nod to the antler-like mandibles that give this insect its common name. Those mandibles resemble the antlers of a roe deer, which is exactly why the original describer chose the name. This link between name and shape highlights how early taxonomists often used visual cues from familiar animals to label new species.
• Male reddish-brown stag beetles bear long, curved upper jaws that look like sickles, and these jaws are considerably larger than those of females. At breeding sites the males clash, using the antler-shaped mandibles to wrestle rivals for access to females. Although their jaws are not as massive as those of Lucanus elaphus, they are still prominent enough to be a key feature of male combat and courtship.
• The larvae of Lucanus capreolus live hidden inside the decaying wood of old deciduous trees, where they feed on the inner timber. Development inside this substrate takes roughly two years before the immature beetles leave the wood to pupate in the surrounding soil. This extended underground phase allows them to mature fully before emerging as adults in the spring and summer.
• Adult reddish-brown stag beetles are most active after dark in the deciduous forests of the eastern United States and parts of Canada, where they normally dwell among decaying logs and stumps. When night falls they are drawn to artificial illumination, so they often congregate around streetlamps, porch bulbs and other light sources.
