• A male mountain nyala's spiral horns can twist through three complete rotations — up to 120 centimetres long — yet they evolved not for fighting rivals but for navigating through thick montane forest without snagging on branches. The horns curve backward in a way that lets them slip past obstacles that would trap a straight-horned antelope. Evolution shaped a weapon into a forest compass.
• Mountain nyalas live only above 2,000 metres in the Ethiopian Highlands, in a patchwork of forest smaller than greater London. Fewer than 3,500 remain in the wild. They've never existed anywhere else on Earth — no fossils, no populations across Africa — making them one of the world's most narrowly endemic large mammals. Lose these forests and you lose a species that has no backup population anywhere.
• A male mountain nyala wears a mane of long hair down his spine and neck that he raises when alarmed, transforming his silhouette from sleek to imposing in less than a second. That same male develops a dewlap — a fold of loose skin — that hangs from his throat and can measure 30 centimetres long. Females lack both features entirely. These aren't ornaments; they're signals broadcast only when males are stressed or competing, a visual language of mood written across the body.
• Unlike most antelopes that live in herds of dozens, mountain nyalas are solitary or travel in groups of just 2–4 animals across steep ravines and moss-draped forest. A single male's home range can span 10 square kilometres — ground he walks at dawn and dusk while most other hoofed animals rest. This solitary habit makes them harder to count, easier to poach, and less able to recover from population crashes than herd-living relatives.
• Mountain nyalas have never been domesticated or successfully bred in captivity for conservation breeding programs — unlike Arabian oryx or European bison. They're listed as Endangered with a declining population, yet zoos hold only a handful of individuals, none reliably reproducing. This means their future depends entirely on protecting their native forests, a fragile link with no backup plan if habitat loss accelerates.
