- The Mexican fox squirrel occupies a trans-border range that stretches across the Sierra Madre Occidental of Mexico down to Jalisco and then northward into the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona. Within Mexico it is found throughout that mountain chain, while in the United States it is confined to the Chiricahua Mountains alone.
- Mexican fox squirrels harvest seeds from pine, Douglas fir and true fir cones by pulling off each individual cone scale to access the nutritious kernels. Their diet is diverse, also including acorns, walnuts, a variety of other tree seeds, hypogeous and occasionally epigeous fungi, and insects when available. When large seeds are abundant they will scatter-hoard them in leaf litter and topsoil, creating numerous small caches across their foraging area.
- Mexican fox squirrels move almost unheard, preferring to stay motionless under cover rather than vocalise, which helps them avoid detection. They are diurnal and non-territorial, spending daylight hours foraging but remaining notably silent and still when potential threats are nearby.
