• A Mexican fox squirrel can leap 10 metres from branch to branch — the equivalent of jumping across a three-storey building horizontally — while carrying a nut in its mouth and never miscalculating the landing. Their eyes are positioned on the sides of their skull, giving them a 270-degree field of view that tracks movement in the canopy without turning their head. This is why they rarely fall, despite spending their entire lives 30 metres above ground in Mexican mountain forests.
• Male Mexican fox squirrels are up to 40% larger than females — a size gap so extreme that scientists once classified them as separate species. A big male weighs nearly 1.4 kilograms, making him heavier than many small rabbit species, while his mate might barely crack a kilogram. This sexual dimorphism likely evolved because larger males can monopolise the best nut-producing trees and defend them during breeding season.
• Each autumn, a Mexican fox squirrel buries between 1,000 and 2,000 seeds, remembering the location of hundreds of them through smell alone — not by retracing steps or visual markers. The ones it forgets become seedlings. Scientists estimate a single squirrel accidentally plants more than 100 new trees per year, making it a keystone disperser for pine and oak forests that would collapse without them.
• When threatened, a Mexican fox squirrel performs a deceptive manoeuvre called 'play dead' by flattening itself against a branch and freezing for up to five minutes, becoming nearly invisible against pine bark. If a predator gets close, it explodes into motion, sprinting to a thinner branch where a hawk or coati cannot follow. This switch from immobility to explosive speed confuses predators trained to track movement.
• The Mexican fox squirrel's tail is nearly as long as its body — up to 30 centimetres — and functions as a living parachute, rudder, and heat sink. When jumping from a high branch, the tail catches air like a sail, slowing the fall and allowing mid-air corrections that no mammal its size should be able to make. In cold mountain nights, it wraps the tail around itself like a blanket, reducing heat loss by 30%.
