• A Parma wallaby weighs 3 to 6 kilograms — about the same as a house cat — making it the smallest macropod in Australia. Despite their tiny frame, they bound at 40 km/h when escaping dingoes, relying on explosive back-leg power to launch themselves through dense forest where larger predators can't follow. Their size is not a weakness but a survival blueprint: they slip through undergrowth that would trap a kangaroo.
• Female Parma wallabies become pregnant again while still nursing their previous joey — a biological overlap that lets them produce young nearly year-round. The moment one baby leaves the pouch, the next one is already developing in utero. This accelerated breeding is a gamble: it works only in stable temperate forests where food doesn't vanish seasonally, which is why Parmas never colonised the arid interior like their larger cousins did.
• In 1932, Parma wallabies were thought completely extinct on mainland Australia — hunted and habitat-cleared to nothing. A handful survived on Macleay Island offshore, unknown to science. When populations were rediscovered on the mainland in the 1960s, conservationists realised the species had hung on in isolated pockets for 30 years without human knowledge, a ghost hiding in plain sight.
• Unlike kangaroos that hop in open country, Parma wallabies move through forest in a crouch-run, keeping their body low and tail straight for balance rather than as a tripod.
