Fascinating facts about the Cape Grysbok
- The Cape grysbok is found only in the Western Cape of South Africa, confined to the narrow strip between Albany and the Cederberg mountains. This tiny antelope lives exclusively within the region's unique Fynbos biome, preferring thick shrubland and occasionally venturing into orchards, vineyards and reed beds. Its range does not extend beyond this area, making it a true endemic species that occurs nowhere else on the planet.
- A Cape grysbok's tail is exceptionally short, measuring only four to eight centimetres, and it lies flat against the body so that it is almost invisible. This diminutive appendage is tucked close to the hindquarters, making it difficult to notice even when the animal is observed at close range. The tiny tail adds little to its overall silhouette, reinforcing the species' compact appearance.
- Male Cape grysboks grow short, sharp, straight horns that are about eight centimetres long, and the horns are smooth rather than ridged.
- When alarmed the Cape grysbok can puff out the fur on its rear, creating a larger silhouette that can startle a predator. This visual trick is part of its defence strategy, which also includes leaping forward toward a threat before sprinting away. By appearing bigger and then quickly retreating, the shy antelope reduces the chance of a successful attack.
- The Cape grysbok rarely needs to drink, obtaining the bulk of its hydration from the leaves and shoots it browses. Because it can survive extended dry spells, it is able to inhabit the arid sections of the Fynbos and even reed beds where water sources are scarce. This ability to rely on food moisture helps it maintain its activity throughout the night and during the cooler winter evenings.
