• A Cape grysbok weighs as much as a bag of sugar — between 3.5 and 5.5 kilograms — making it one of Africa's tiniest antelopes. Yet this pocket-sized herbivore can leap 2 metres straight up and bound away at 40 km/h when a predator appears. Their size is no accident: in the open savanna where they live, being small means needing less water during droughts that kill larger grazers, and moving through dense brush faster than a caracal can follow.
• Cape grysbok are born with a head start most mammals don't have. Does give birth to single, fully furred calves that can stand and follow their mother within hours of birth — not helpless pink things in a burrow. This precocial birth strategy exists because their savanna home has nowhere to hide a newborn, so youngsters must be ready to run before their eyes are even fully open.
• Males are walking territorial markers. A male Cape grysbok spends dawn and dusk secreting scent from glands beneath his eyes, rubbing his forehead on bushes, grass, and rocks across a territory no bigger than 15 hectares. He marks the same spots repeatedly — a living signpost telling rivals 'this is mine' without ever fighting, conserving the energy his tiny body simply cannot spare.
• The Cape grysbok's teeth never stop growing, a trait shared with rodents but rare among hoofed mammals. Grinding coarse savanna grasses and leaves for hours each day wears them down constantly, so evolution built teeth that erupt throughout life. Skip a few years of grazing and those teeth would grow until eating became impossible — they're built entirely around a lifestyle, not a body.
• Unlike most antelopes that live in herds, the Cape grysbok is almost always alone or in a pair. This solitary life in open country seems reckless — no group alarm system, no safety in numbers — but it works because they rely on being noticed last. Their cryptic brown coat and ability to freeze motionless for minutes at a time lets them vanish into the savanna landscape where a herd would stand out like targets.
