• A blackbuck can spin 180 degrees mid-leap while running at 80 kilometres per hour — a manoeuvre that lets them dodge a predator's charge without breaking stride. Their spiral horns, which grow in a perfect corkscrew and can reach 76 centimetres long, act like a gyroscope, keeping them balanced through the most violent direction changes in the animal kingdom. Evolution built them as the ultimate escape artist on open ground.
• Males are born brown. By their first birthday, they turn jet black — a colour change so complete it's as if they've been dipped in ink. Females and juveniles stay chestnut-brown their whole lives. This isn't camouflage; it's a social billboard. The darker a male, the more testosterone he carries, and the more territory he can hold. Colour announces rank without a fight.
• Blackbucks invented the pronking leap long before springhares made it famous: they explode vertically off all four hooves at once, launching themselves 2 metres into the air in a stiff-legged bound. Predators like African wild dogs expect prey to zigzag or bolt straight; pronking is pure deception. The animal that jumps highest looks too nimble to catch, even if it's not trying to escape.
• A single population vanished from Pakistan in the 1990s — fewer than 50 animals in one last reserve — before a reintroduction program clawed them back to 5,000. The species nearly became a footnote. Today they've recovered because of a few conservationists who refused to let a 2-kilogramme antelope disappear. It's one of India's quietest conservation wins.
• Blackbucks can survive on plants so dry and low-nutrition that most antelopes starve. Their stomach is a four-chambered fermentation tank that wrings every calorie from desert scrub, and their kidneys are engineered to lose almost no water to urine. In the scorching Indian savanna where food vanishes for months, this animal simply doesn't need to drink — water from plants is enough.
