Fascinating facts about the Pampas Deer
- During the 1860s the commercial hunt of Pampas deer reached astonishing levels, with export records from the Port of Buenos Aires listing around two million pelts shipped to Europe in that single decade. Over the centuries the species had been harvested in the millions, and the arrival of roads and automobiles later made hunting even easier. This historic over-exploitation contributed to the severe population declines seen today.
- Less than one percent of the Pampas deer's original range remains, meaning only a tiny fragment of the habitat that existed in 1900 survives today. Human activity has altered much of the landscape, converting grasslands and wetlands into agriculture and reducing the flood-plain ecosystems the deer rely on. The loss of this habitat, together with hunting pressure, has left the species with fragmented, isolated populations.
- The total Pampas deer population is about 80,000 individuals, with the majority of those animals found in Brazil. These deer inhabit the low-elevation grasslands of South America, favouring areas where grass is tall enough to conceal a standing animal. Many of them live on the Pantanal wetlands, where ongoing conservation projects aim to protect the remaining numbers.
- Males emit a strong odour from glands in their back hooves. The scent can be detected up to 1.5 km away.
- Females with a fawn will fake a limp to distract a predator. The behaviour is also used when the mother is uncertain, such as when a human appears.
