A jaguar or puma sees the deer zigzag upward in impossible arcs, each leap burning precious energy the predator can't match.
• Pampas deer have been hunted so ruthlessly that fewer than 2,000 exist in the wild today, down from millions 500 years ago. Within days, the fawn stops moving entirely, lying flat on the ground for up to 20 hours a day while its mother forages separately — a strategy that works only if grassland is tall enough to conceal them.
