- With a chromosome count of 2n = 54, the northern mole vole lives without a Y chromosome, both males and females carry two X chromosomes. This rare sex-chromosome setup, shared only with its close cousin E. tancrei, flips the usual mammalian rule that males are XY. By ditching the Y, the species shows how flexible genetic systems can be, offering a living laboratory for scientists studying sex-determination evolution.
- Measuring just 130 mm (5.1 in) long and weighing up to 70 g, the northern mole vole packs a powerhouse fore-limb musculature into a tiny, wedge-shaped body with a flat head and short neck. Its large incisors act like underground drills, letting it carve extensive burrows despite its diminutive size. This combination of compact form and strong digging tools lets the vole thrive beneath the soil.
- The vole's underground homes are a network of chambers buried roughly 4 m (13 ft) below the surface, with sealed entrances that keep the world out. When the colony needs fresh soil or a new territory, individuals can sprint up to 800 m (2,600 ft) above ground. Such long surface forays, though rare, keep most of its life safely hidden underground.
- A single pregnancy lasts only three weeks, and a female can produce three or four litters each year, each litter holding two to four newborns. Those pups grow so fast they reach sexual maturity at just six weeks old.
