- Richardson's ground squirrels stay just under a foot long, yet their bodies swing through a dramatic weight cycle each year. Adults measure about 30 centimetres (12 in) long, then emerge from hibernation weighing 200-275 g for females and 350-450 g for males. By the time they settle back into their burrows for the next winter, they can bulk up to nearly 750 g.
- In the wild, Richardson's ground squirrels live just a few short years, but the gap between the sexes is striking. Males average three years of life, while females stretch to about four years. When humans keep them in captivity, some individuals push out to five-seven years.
- A single Richardson's ground squirrel mother can produce a sizable family each spring. She gives birth once a year, with litters averaging six pups and a record high of fourteen. Babies arrive in April or May, stay hidden underground for roughly 30 days, and then burst out between late May and mid-June weighing 50-100 g.
- When danger looms, Richardson's ground squirrels sound two distinct alarms that tell friends exactly what to watch for. A high-pitched whistle warns of ground predators like coyotes or badgers, while a short "chirp" signals aerial threats such as hawks. Their keen ears pick up these calls, and the whole colony reacts, giving the squirrels a coordinated escape strategy against a predator list that includes hawks, owls, snakes, weasels, American badgers and coyotes. This vocal vigilance is a key to their survival on open prairies.
- Farmers see Richardson's ground squirrels as crop-eating troublemakers, and in 2010 Saskatchewan officially labeled them pests, unlocking government-backed control programs. The Saskatoon Wildlife Federation tried a 12-week "gopher derby" in 2002 to cut numbers, awarding cash for each tail collected. By 2004 the population had dropped enough for the contest to be cancelled.
