• Painted turtles have survived for 15 million years. Their fossil record stretches from Nebraska 15 million years ago to sites less than 300 000 years old across almost the entire United States and southern Canada. This deep history shows they repeatedly weathered climate shifts and habitat changes, and remain listed as Least Concern.
• Painted turtles can survive freezing winters thanks to an antifreeze-like compound in their blood that prevents cell ice formation. They brumate in mud at the bottom of ponds, remaining active only during daylight hours to bask and warm up. This physiological trick lets them inhabit waters as far north as southern Canada.
• The painted turtle's range stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific, covering eight of Canada's ten provinces, 45 U.S. states and a single Mexican state. It is the only native turtle whose distribution spans the entire continent, a pattern forged when three isolated Ice-Age populations expanded northward about 11 000 years ago, keeping it abundant overall.
• Painted turtles are diurnal baskers that can gather in groups of up to 50 on a single log, using the sun to shed leeches and raise body temperature. Their webbed feet and flat shells make them swimmers, yet they dive instantly at the slightest threat, retracting head and limbs into their armor. This blend of social basking and rapid escape helps them avoid predators such as raccoons, otters, foxes, and coyotes.
• Adult painted turtles grow to 13-25 cm (5-10 in) long. Females weigh about 500 g while males average 300 g.
