Otavio's Robber Frog

Fascinating facts about the Otavio's Robber Frog

• A scientist once counted this frog perched from sea level up to 1,200 m (3,937 ft), showing it can thrive from lowland swamps to mountain forest edges. That altitude span rivals many birds that migrate vertically each season, reminding us amphibians can handle diverse climates too.
• When rain fills a temporary pond, the adult builds a foam nest for its eggs. This construction lets the species reproduce even in short-lived water bodies.
• Researchers have spotted this frog in both primary and secondary forests, as well as in flooded zones right at the forest fringe. Its willingness to live at the forest edge means it can persist where untouched habitat meets human-altered land, offering a clue for protecting mixed-use landscapes.
• The IUCN rates the species as least concern, yet its biggest danger comes from forest loss tied to urban sprawl, agriculture, timber work, and grazing. Seeing a stable status alongside ongoing habitat pressure highlights how quickly a comfortable rating can change if we don’t guard its woodlands.
• Protected reserves have recorded populations of this frog, showing that legal safeguards can hold viable groups even amid surrounding development. These strongholds act as lifeboats, emphasizing the power of conservation areas to buffer fragile forest dwellers.
