About the Oriental Fire-bellied Toad

The Oriental fire-bellied toad (Bombina orientalis) is a diminutive amphibian, just 3.8–5.1 cm long and weighing 28–57 g, cloaked in a mottled green-black dorsal coat peppered with the genus’s signature tubercles. Its most arresting feature is the vivid ventral splash, yellow, red or orange-red patches dappled with dark spots, flanked by ruby-red finger and toe tips, a warning palette that signals the mild toxin excreted from its skin when disturbed. Native to northeastern Asia, these semiaquatic frogs inhabit slow-moving streams, ponds, and the surrounding coniferous or broad-leaved forests up to 1,100 m elevation, thriving even in heavily polluted waters. Diurnal by nature, they emerge from hibernation in mid-May, when males emit a delicate, triangle-like call by inhaling, luring females to lay clutches of 40–110 eggs near the water’s surface; tadpoles sprout legs in six to eight weeks and metamorphose by late summer. Their diet shifts dramatically from algae, fungi and detritus as larvae to terrestrial invertebrates, worms, molluscs and insects, as adults, a shift that also augments their skin toxicity. A surprising trait is their ability to learn quickly: in maze experiments, slightly dehydrated individuals solved simple and complex mazes within days, outperforming typical frogs such as Rana and Bufo, hinting at a cognitive edge rarely seen in amphibians.
