Ornate Narrow-mouthed Frog

Fascinating facts about the Ornate Narrow-mouthed Frog

• A male ornate narrow-mouthed frog barely reaches 24 mm (0.9 in) from snout to vent, while the females stretch to about 28 mm (1.1 in) – barely the length of a paperclip. Their tiny size lets them slip beneath leaf litter where larger predators can’t follow, showing how mini-body plans open ecological niches.
• Spot the arrow-shaped mark on its back and you’ve spotted an ornate narrow-mouthed frog; this yellow-brown pattern is a visual cue used by field biologists.
• When monsoons swell temporary pools, these frogs breed in the ponds and temporary pools that form in the rainy season, showing reliance on short-lived water.
• In the wild they hide not just in leaves but sometimes in elephant dung, using the warm, moist environment as a shelter.
• Despite inhabiting grasslands, forests, and even coniferous woodlands across Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the species is listed as Least Concern because its populations stay stable and it tolerates many habitat types. Its resilience reminds us that adaptability can buffer small amphibians against extinction pressures.
