About the Sand Toad

The sand toad, also known as the Cape sand toad or narrow-headed toad (Vandijkophrynus angusticeps), is a modestly sized true toad distinguished by an unspotted white belly and a striking bright-yellow flush that tinges the dorsal surfaces of its feet. Its body blends seamlessly with the fynbos heathland of South Africa’s southwestern and southern Western Cape, extending eastward to the extreme southwestern corner of the Eastern Cape, from Nieuwoudtville to Humansdorp. In this mosaic of coastal flats and the rugged Cape Fold Mountains, the toad occupies elevations from sea level up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft), favoring sandy depressions and even clay soils where temporary pools form after rain. When winter rains arrive between May and September, the sand toad emerges from its hidden refuges to breed; males call from exposed sites at the water’s edge, their unusually large testes hinting at fierce competition for mates. The species can survive in both pristine heathland and adjacent agricultural fields, and it is believed to be stable and common through most of its range.
