About the Oriental Pied Hornbill

The oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris) is a medium-sized frugivore that roams the canopy of subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Measuring 55–60 cm from head to tail with a striking black plumage that shimmers green, its white-tipped tail and stark white underparts give it a pied appearance. The adult’s bill is a vivid yellow, the male’s longer at 19 cm and capped with a laterally flattened, cylindrical casque that can protrude like a horn, while the female’s eyes are a muted gray-brown. Its call, crowlike, braying, or harsh crackles, echoes through the forest, announcing the presence of a bird that can weigh up to a kilogram and navigate the dense foliage with ease. When fruit is abundant, these hornbills form noisy foraging flocks, plucking figs, rambutans, palm fruit and a variety of berries, while also snatching insects, small reptiles, amphibians, fish, bats, and even the eggs of other birds. Their large gape allows them to swallow and later disperse seeds that few other birds can handle, making them vital architects of forest regeneration. A surprising twist in their ecology is the seasonal shift in diet: non-breeding birds favor sugar-rich berries, whereas breeding pairs seek lipid-rich fruits and protein-laden prey, expanding their range to meet the heightened nutritional demands of their chicks.
