Fascinating facts about the Palawan Peacock-Pheasant
- The male's tail feathers sparkle with iridescent electric blue-violet and metallic green-turquoise, each plume ending in a bright "eye" surrounded by black and gray rings, while the female's plumage is a muted brown with a white face. These eye-like spots act like mirrors, flashing when the bird lifts one wing and compresses its body during courtship, a display that also may startle predators.
- Peacock-pheasants eat a wide range of invertebrates, like isopods, earwigs, insect larvae, mollusks, centipedes and termites, plus small frogs, drupes, seeds and berries. This diverse diet lets them thrive in leaf-litter-rich forest floors where they also use multiple metatarsal spurs.
- Both parents raise chicks for up to two years; the female usually lays up to two eggs, and the pair stays monogamous, renesting each year. The male acts as a sentinel, defending the nest site fiercely, while their short, high screech calls last 0.5-1 second and repeat every five seconds.
- IUCN estimates only 20,000-49,999 mature individuals remain, classifying the bird as Vulnerable and listing it on CITES Appendix I. Ongoing forest loss from logging, mining, farming and urban spread, plus hunting for pets and meat, are the chief threats. The species appears in just one protected area, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, and serves as the flagship symbol of the city of Puerto Princesa.
- Up to 50 cm long, the Palawan peacock-pheasant is a medium-sized bird that lives only on Palawan Island, where it roams humid lowland and foothill forests below 1,000 m elevation. Its size while still being strong enough for swift, direct flight.
