Fascinating facts about the Reticulated Python

• The reticulated python is recognised as the longest snake on the planet and ranks third in mass after only the green anaconda and Burmese python. Wild individuals measured in southern Sumatra show a length spectrum from 1.5 m up to 6.5 m and a weight range of 1 kg to 75 kg.
• While specimens longer than six metres are uncommon, the species regularly produces individuals that surpass this mark, a feat no other living snake achieves on a consistent basis. The Guinness Book of World Records confirms it as the sole extant snake to regularly exceed six metres in length. This regularity distinguishes the reticulated python from all other snakes, reinforcing its reputation as the true giant of the reptile world.
• Reticulated pythons are ambush predators; larger adults shift from small mammals to sizeable vertebrates such as small Indian civet, binturong, primates, wild boar and deer that can weigh over 60 kg.
• Reticulated pythons have been responsible for a handful of human deaths, with victims sometimes being swallowed whole or in part. These incidents are rare but have involved adults as well as children, underscoring the snake's powerful constriction. In recent years the fatal attacks have been reported mainly from Indonesia, particularly on Sulawesi and its surrounding islands, where the species is common.
• Unlike most pythons, the reticulated python is an excellent swimmer and has been observed far out on open water, a trait that enables it to cross seas and reach isolated landmasses. This aquatic ability has allowed it to colonise many small islands throughout its South and Southeast Asian range, expanding its distribution beyond the mainland. It frequents rivers, streams and lakes within rainforests and woodlands, using these waterways as natural highways.
