• At 6.95 metres, the longest reticulated python ever recorded could wrap around three adult humans lying head to toe. They hold the title for longest snake on Earth — longer than anacondas, longer than king cobras. That length comes from having up to 330 vertebrae (humans have 33), each one locked in place by extra joints that let them contort into nearly any space. In the rainforest, this means they can hunt prey in tree hollows and rock crevices where competitors can't reach.
• A reticulated python can go nine months without eating after swallowing a 50-kilogram wild boar whole. Their jaw unhinges to a 120-degree angle — further than any other snake — and their lower jaw bones aren't fused, so each side moves independently as they work prey down their throat. Once inside, their metabolism throttles down and their organs literally shrink, burning almost no energy until digestion finishes. Then they hunt again.
• Their name comes from the Latin word retis, meaning net — a pattern of light diamonds outlined in dark scales that looks like it was woven by hand. This isn't just camouflage in dappled rainforest light; it's a heat map. The scales contain pits that sense infrared radiation from warm-blooded prey, letting them hunt in absolute darkness by seeing the body heat of a bird perched 10 centimetres away.
• In Southeast Asian villages, reticulated pythons are neither hunted nor feared — they're tolerated as pest control. A single adult eats enough rats and monkeys to protect rice crops and fruit trees for an entire season, reducing the need for poison. Yet they're quietly disappearing: between 2008 and 2018, the skin trade exported over 3.5 million hides from Indonesia and Malaysia. Each skin becomes boots, belts, or handbags in wealthy countries, and the populations have never recovered.
• Female reticulated pythons guard their eggs for 60 to 90 days without eating, coiled around a clutch of 15 to 80 eggs in a tree hollow or burrow. She trembles her muscles to generate heat — raising the clutch temperature 2 to 3 degrees above the forest around her — keeping the eggs warm and preventing mould in the humid rainforest. She abandons them only once they hatch, having invested months of survival on nothing but stored fat.
