This strategy makes it nearly invisible: its mottled brown body mimics lichen patches so perfectly that a predator will walk past without spotting it.
• The adult moth's single white spot on its otherwise grey-brown wings gives the species its name, but that spot serves a purpose beyond appearance — it breaks up the moth's wing outline, making it harder for a bird's eye to detect when the moth rests on lichen-covered bark. Field tests show predators take twice as long to spot spotted individuals compared to plain-winged relatives in the same genus.
• Female one-spotted moths lay eggs only on lichens that meet strict chemical standards — the lichen must be a specific mix of algal and fungal partners, determined by taste-receptors on the female's abdomen. A one-spotted moth overwintering in a dead log survives temperatures that would kill most insects, waking in spring when lichen begins to grow again.
• Eastern North American populations have declined in moist woodlands over the past 40 years as old-growth forest shrinks and pollution reduces lichen diversity in remaining patches. The moth does not appear on any conservation watchlist yet, but it is a canary for lichen health — where one-spotted moths vanish, the entire woodland lichen community has likely collapsed, taking with it dozens of specialised species that depend on those ancient growths.
