Fascinating facts about the Oarfish

• At 11 metres long — longer than a school bus — the oarfish is the longest bony fish on Earth, yet almost nobody has ever seen one alive. They live 200 to 1,000 metres down in the twilight zone where sunlight barely reaches, and only wash ashore when sick or injured. Dead specimens have fuelled sea serpent legends for centuries, but a living oarfish has been filmed by humans fewer than a dozen times.
• Their dorsal fin runs the entire length of their body like a banner, held aloft by a gas-filled swim bladder that keeps them vertical in the water column. They barely move — drifting like an underwater ribbon, undulating gently to filter-feed on clouds of small fish and shrimp. This 11-metre-long creature burns so little energy that it may eat only a fraction of what other fish its size require.
• An oarfish has a head the size of a golf ball and a mouth that cannot close around anything larger than a grain of rice. Instead of hunting, they glide through plankton swarms with their jaw open, sieving millions of tiny animals in a single pass. Their teeth are minute and purely vestigial — evolution's leftover from ancestors that actually needed to bite.
• When threatened, an oarfish can detach its own tail and swim away, leaving a thrashing decoy behind to distract the predator. The tail regenerates slowly over months or years, and scientists have found wild oarfish with stumps or partially regrown tails — living proof this escape strategy actually works in the abyss.
• Oarfish may spend their entire lives in near-total darkness, yet their eyes are 2.5 centimetres across — enormous relative to their head — with a lens tilted upward to catch any faint light filtering down from above. This suggests they hunt by spotting bioluminescent prey or the silhouette of food passing overhead, reading the deep ocean the way we read a dimly lit page.
