Northern Neotropical River Otter

Fascinating facts about the Northern Neotropical River Otter

• Northern Neotropical river otters have just been lifted out of the Lutra longicaudis umbrella and given their own name, Lontra annectens. This shift follows recent studies that showed the old "subspecies" was actually a separate branch on the otter family tree, making the group paraphyletic.
• In Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, camera traps logged 13 mammal species over 537 trap-days, and among them appeared the newly recognized Lontra annectens, still listed as Not Evaluated by the IUCN. The same six-year survey (2018-2023) counted 60 mammal species, representing almost 4% of the world's known mammals, showing the region's huge biodiversity. Spotting this otter in such a hotspot highlights that even well-studied countries can hide data-deficient species, urging local conservation plans to include them before they slip toward risk.
• You can find Lontra annectens from Central America to north-western South America, a stretch that doesn't overlap with any other Neotropical river otter populations.
• The IUCN still treats Lontra annectens as a subspecies of the broader Neotropical river otter, even though genetic work says it deserves full species rank.
