• At 23 centimetres long and weighing just 62 grams, the pearl kite is smaller than a robin — yet it hunts like a tiny falcon, plucking lizards mid-sprint from the ground with talons that move faster than the eye can track. Most predators this size hunt insects; the pearl kite chose reptiles, a diet that demands precision strikes in dense forest where visibility is measured in metres.
• The pearl kite's call is a machine-gun rattle — a sound so rapid and metallic it doesn't sound like a bird at all. Males fire off these staccato bursts from high perches at dawn, claiming territory across the Amazon and Central America with a noise that cuts through jungle noise like a chainsaw through silence. Other birds fall quiet when they hear it.
• Unlike most raptors, pearl kites hunt in pairs that stay bonded for years, coordinating attacks through the canopy with barely a signal between them. One bird flushes prey; the other intercepts. This partnership lets them hunt prey larger than lone kites could manage — small lizards that dart through branches where only a duo can corner them.
• Pearl kites breed in tiny stick nests so flimsy they look abandoned, often built in abandoned nests of other birds or in thorny tangles barely wider than a coffee cup.
