• A northern yellow bat can eat half its own body weight in insects during a single night — the metabolic equivalent of a human consuming 50 kg of food before dawn. To fuel this, their heart beats 1,000 times per minute while hunting, ten times faster than a human's resting rate. They hunt in total darkness using echolocation calls that bounce back in 20 milliseconds, fast enough to track a moth's evasive dive and adjust mid-flight.
• Unlike most bats that roost in caves, northern yellow bats sleep hanging from tree leaves and Spanish moss in a position so exposed it looks like suicide — wrapped like a small furry leaf, barely camouflaged, utterly vulnerable.
