Spanning from Poland's forests to the Ob River in Siberia, the northern white-breasted hedgehog covers a continent-wide belt of Europe and western Asia. Its range even reaches the sun-kissed shores of Crete, Corfu and Rhodes, where dense populations thrive. This massive footprint means the species encounters a kaleidoscope of climates, from temperate woodlands to harsh Siberian steppe.
Genetic and morphological breakthroughs in the 1990s lifted the northern white-breasted hedgehog out of the shadow of its cousins, granting it full species status and revealing five distinct subspecies: roumanicus, bolkayi, drozdovskii, nesiotes, and pallidus.
Living hand-in-hand with humans, the northern white-breasted hedgehog is a prolific carrier of ticks like Ixodes hexagonus and the common European Ixodes ricinus. A massive flea survey examined 759 specimens and found every flea harbored rickettsial bacteria, with 1.5% carrying Rickettsia helvetica, 0.7% Bartonella henselae, 5.2% hemoplasmas, and 10% an unnamed rickettsia genotype. Their urban presence turns hedgehogs into moving reservoirs, bridging wildlife pathogens to pets and potentially people.
Despite its close ties to cities and farms, the hedgehog shows no signs of a regional population crash. Across its vast stretch, from the Adriatic islands to Siberia, local counts remain steady.
