The Indian brown mongoose's tail measures between 20 and 34 cm, which is roughly two-thirds of its body length. This proportion gives the animal a balanced silhouette that aids swift manoeuvring through undergrowth. Its tail is also noticeably furrier than that of the small Indian mongoose, and the pointed tip together with a fringe of fur beneath the hindleg provide reliable field marks to separate it from other regional mongooses.
During the 1970s the species was deliberately introduced to Fiji, where it now coexists with the Javan mongoose in the same habitats. The animal remains classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
Although the Indian brown mongoose is generally shy and tends to avoid human settlement, it will occasionally wander into suburban gardens to hunt snakes and mice. It is a nocturnal animal that prefers solitary life and keeps its home range within dense forest patches.
When hunting it freezes to hear prey sounds, then launches a rapid bite to the head. It stops completely still to listen for the faint noises a creature makes, then springs forward in a sudden lunge. This method lets it capture a wide range of prey, from tiny rodents to snakes, lizards, spiders, grubs, birds, eggs and frogs. Occasionally it will also take berries and flowers when they are available.
In South India it inhabits elevations of 700-1,300 m, ranging from Virajpet and Ooty to Tiger Shola, the High Wavy Mountains, Kalakad-Mundanthurai, Valparai plateau and Peeramedu. In Sri Lanka the species is limited to the west coast, central hills and western urban centres, and it keeps its home in dense forest patches, often preferring jungle areas thick with ferns and brush.
