• A brown howler monkey's call travels 5 kilometres through dense rainforest — farther than a jet engine, one of the loudest sounds any land mammal makes. Their oversized hyoid bone (a throat structure shaped like a horseshoe) acts as a natural amplifier, resonating at frequencies so deep they vibrate the forest floor itself. Males howl at dawn and dusk to claim territory, and rival troops answer from miles away without ever leaving their trees.
• Brown howlers eat mostly leaves that would poison most primates — leaves packed with toxic compounds that wreck digestion in other species.
