• From the Baltic coast to Lake Baikal, this mouse spans a continent. Its main range stretches eastward as far as Lake Baikal in Siberia and southward from the Arctic Circle to the Carpathians, with isolated pockets in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Austria.
• A five-toed climber, this mouse uses its prehensile tail to steady itself on twigs. It feeds mainly on buds, shoots, grass seeds and berries, but will also pull earthworms, insects and snails from under loose bark. The combination of agile climbing and a mixed diet lets it exploit both the canopy and the forest floor, turning a single individual into a versatile forager that can survive in both dense woodlands and marshy grasslands.
• Between May and August the mouse builds a dry-vegetation nest in a bush or moss clump, then produces a single litter of up to six young after a 4-5 week gestation. Come October it retreats to a dry crack, a hollow tree or a rock gap, wrapping its tail spirally around its body for warmth through a hibernation that can last until May.
• Despite its vast range, the northern birch mouse is listed as Least Concern because its numbers aren't dropping fast enough to trigger a higher threat level. In Western Europe it's uncommon and lives in isolated subpopulations, yet eastward it becomes very common. While no major threats are recorded, agriculture could impact German populations and deforestation may affect Romanian ones.
• The northern birch mouse measures just 5 to 8 cm (2.0 to 3.1 in) without its tail and tips the scales at 5 to 13 g (0.18 to 0.46 oz). Its head-body length stretches 2 to 3 in (51 to 76 mm) while the tail adds another 3 to 4.25 in (76 to 108 mm).
