• Only about 356 North Atlantic right whales remain in the western Atlantic, a figure that underscores how fragile the population is. These individuals travel each year from rich feeding grounds in the Labrador Sea to winter calving areas off Georgia and Florida, where heavy shipping traffic adds risk. In the eastern Atlantic the total may be only a few teens, leading scientists to consider the group functionally extinct.
• Up to forty-five percent of a right whale's body weight is blubber, a thick layer that makes the animal exceptionally buoyant. Because blubber has a low density, a carcass will float after death, a trait that historically aided whalers in retrieving the whale. Adult right whales typically weigh between 40,000 and 90,000 kg, so the blubber alone can amount to tens of thousands of kilograms of fat. This buoyancy is a distinctive feature of the species.
