• A North Atlantic right whale's mouth is 4.5 metres long and lined with baleen plates up to 2.7 metres high — so vast that a human could stand upright inside it. Every gulp filters 100 litres of seawater, straining out trillions of copepods smaller than a grain of rice. They can eat a tonne of plankton a day, yet they live on prey invisible to the naked eye. This paradox of gigantism hunting the microscopic shaped how whales conquered the ocean.
• Only 340 individuals remain in the North Atlantic — fewer than giant pandas. In the 1800s, whalers hunted them to near extinction because they float when dead (unlike other whales) and their blubber yielded more oil per animal than any other species. A single pregnant female can carry over a tonne of her own fat as a prize. That single trait — buoyancy in death — nearly erased an entire species.
• Entanglement in fishing gear kills more right whales than any other cause, yet these whales cannot back up out of nets. Their flippers evolved for slow, precise steering in dense kelp forests millions of years ago, long before industrial fishing existed. Today that evolutionary heritage is a death sentence: they can only move forward, dragging rope that wraps around their heads and bodies until they drown. • A calf nurses for a year and drinks 150 litres of milk daily — so rich in fat (about 35%) that it's the consistency of mayonnaise. By the time it weans, the calf has gained 50 kilograms a week and weighs as much as a car. The mother loses up to a quarter of her own body weight in that year, surviving on stored blubber alone during migration. It is the most metabolically expensive parenting strategy among ocean mammals.
• Their callosities — thick patches of rough skin unique to each whale, like fingerprints — harbour colonies of lice and crustaceans that live nowhere else. Researchers identify every known right whale by mapping these scars and callosity patterns, a technique that has tracked individual whales for over 40 years. One female named Baldy has survived at least four entanglements; her wounds are archive entries. These whales are not statistics — they are documented individuals we know by name, making their decline personal.
