• A desert horned lizard can stretch out to about 3.75 inches (95 mm). That modest size hides a powerful bite-sized stomach built to gulp massive ant swarms. By expanding their gut, they offset the low nutrition of chitin-rich ants, turning a diet of tiny insects into enough fuel to survive harsh deserts. Their size-to-stomach strategy reveals how evolution can bulk up the belly when the bite is small.
