Fascinating facts about the Desert Horned Lizard

• A desert horned lizard can squirt blood from the corners of its eyes up to 2 metres away when cornered by a predator. The blood tastes horrible to coyotes and bobcats, giving the lizard seconds to escape. This defensive weapon evolved only in horned lizards — no other reptile on Earth does this.
• Their stomachs can hold up to 3,000 harvester ants at once, and they'll spend entire mornings methodically plucking them from the ground one by one. An adult eats roughly 600 ants per day. To humans that would mean eating 200 hamburgers daily without ever feeling full.
• Horned lizards are walking solar panels. They bask in the morning sun not just to warm up, but to activate their digestion — without heat, their stomachs can't break down all those ants. Cold nights slow everything down; warm days fuel the whole machine. Desert seasons literally control their metabolism.
• When a female is ready to lay eggs, she digs a burrow 30 centimetres deep in hard-packed soil and deposits 5 to 16 eggs before sealing it shut and walking away forever. The babies must dig themselves out weeks later with no parental help, emerging into one of Earth's harshest environments with only instinct as a guide.
• The flattened body and crown of spikes make a horned lizard look much larger to a predator than it actually is — a defensive illusion perfected over millions of years. Ironically, this same shape makes them fatally slow on hard ground, which is why they vanish from deserts where urban sprawl replaces sand with asphalt.
