• A silverback mountain gorilla's arm span stretches 2.7 metres — wide enough to touch both walls of a narrow hallway — yet he weighs up to 220 kg and moves with the grace of a dancer, not a battering ram. His 32 teeth generate a bite force of 1,300 PSI, but he uses them almost exclusively on leaves and stems, never on other gorillas during a fight. What looks like raw power is actually exquisite control: every punch pulled, every charge a bluff, every hierarchy dispute solved through posture and screams. They evolved to be gentle giants in a world where violence would be catastrophic.
• Mountain gorillas live in a vertical world where oxygen drops 10% for every 1,000 metres of elevation — they inhabit slopes between 2,200 and 4,300 metres, higher than any other great ape on Earth. Their blood carries 25% more haemoglobin than lowland gorillas, and their nostrils are physically larger to gulp thin mountain air. They've traded energy for altitude, becoming the only apes that live in cloud forest, where mist never lifts and leaves stay perpetually damp.
• A gorilla spends 30% of its day eating, consuming up to 34 kg of vegetation daily — equivalent to eating 100 heads of lettuce — yet gains almost no weight. Their stomach ferments leaves like a cow's, producing gas so potent they've been described as 'mobile methane factories'. This inefficient digestion is by design: gorillas evolved to be bulk feeders, processing enormous volumes of low-calorie vegetation to fuel their massive bodies and brain.
• Only about 1,004 mountain gorillas remain alive today, split between two isolated populations separated by just 37 kilometres. Twenty years ago there were 680. They exist in a razor-thin strip of forest across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo — an area smaller than New York City — making them statistically more endangered than giant pandas. Yet their numbers are rising, the only great ape population increasing, because of one ruthless anti-poaching commitment: Rwanda and Uganda treat gorilla rangers like soldiers and gorilla killers like criminals.
• A mountain gorilla's hand is built to grip leaves and vines, not swing through trees — they're the terrestrial apes, spending 95% of their lives on the ground. But a silverback's hand print is 27 cm across, larger than a human foot, and his fingers can strip the skin from a branch with the precision of a surgeon. They don't climb to hunt or flee; they climb to nest, building a new bed every single night from branches and leaves, then abandoning it forever. In their lifetime a gorilla builds roughly 13,000 mattresses, each used once.
