• Mountain goats can survive wind gusts of up to 160 km/h (99 mph) and temperatures as low as −46 °C (−51 °F) thanks to a double-layered coat: a dense undercoat of fine wool covered by longer, hollow hairs. They stay on exposed cliffs, and the extreme elevation of their habitat serves as a primary defense against many predators. Their wool also sheds in spring when they rub against rocks.
• A mountain goat's hooves are built like tiny crampons: cloven pads spread apart for grip and sharp dewclaws at the tips prevent slipping on slopes steeper than 60°.
