Fascinating facts about the Mexican Cottontail

• Weighing between 1,800 and 2,300 g, the Mexican cottontail is the largest rabbit native to Mexico and one of the biggest members of its genus. Adults reach an average body length of 485-515 mm, a size that puts them on a par with medium-sized hares. This combination of weight and length makes them noticeably larger than most other Sylvilagus species, giving them a robust build suited to the varied habitats they occupy across the country.
• Unlike most cottontail rabbits, the Mexican cottontail constructs short burrows that are more like those of the European rabbit and the pygmy rabbit. Its tunnels are shallow, averaging just 23 cm in length before terminating in a chamber about 17 cm below the surface. This burrowing style provides a quick, concealed refuge for the rabbit and its young, differing markedly from the shallow scrapes used by many other cottontail species.
• When a mother Mexican cottontail prepares a nursery burrow, she lines the nest with dry grasses, pine needles and bits of woody plants, adding oat straw and alfalfa hay as extra food sources. The young remain at the burrow entrance for nursing until they are about 12 days old, after which the mother seals the entrance once they are weaned.
• It inhabits terrain from sea level to the high peaks of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, reaching elevations of about 4,300 m (14,000 ft). At these heights it occupies pine-oak forests, grasslands and even disturbed pastures.
• Fossils of this rabbit have been uncovered in southern Arizona, dating to the late Blancan stage 2.7-2.4 million years ago. These finds extend its historic range into what is now the United States.
