- The maritime striped squirrel darts through the treetops of southern and eastern China, Taiwan, and the Mekong-east side of Laos and Vietnam, where it lives a fully daylight, tree-bound life. It munches on a mixed menu of fruits, seeds and insects, and even sips the sweet nectar of ginger (Alpinia kwangsiensis), showing how flexible its diet is in the subtropical forest canopy.
- Genetic work has uncovered that the genus Tamiops actually contains seven well-supported species, not the handful long assumed from coat colour alone. The study listed T. maritimus alongside T. swinhoei, T. hainanus, T. barbei, T. roldolphii, T. minshanica and T. mcclellandii, confirming that what looks like a single "striped squirrel" group is in fact a hidden tapestry of distinct lineages.
- When scientists compared DNA across the seven Tamiops lineages, they found the genetic distances measured by the K2P model ranged from 0.095 to 0.204. Those numbers mean that even the most similar pair differs by almost ten percent of their mitochondrial DNA, while the most divergent pair is more than twenty percent apart. Such deep splits underline how long each lineage has been evolving on its own.
- One former subspecies, T. maritimus hainanus, was promoted to full species status after DNA dating showed it split from its nearest ancestor about 6.01 million years ago.
- Broad-scale dating indicates the whole Tamiops clade began diversifying roughly 13.3 million years ago (Mya).
