About the Many-Colored Bush Anole

The many-colored bush anole, Polychrus marmoratus, is a strikingly variegated lizard that roams the semi-deciduous forests of northern South America. Weighing just over 100 grams and stretching 30 to 50 centimetres from snout to tail, it bears a blunt head crowned with large, smooth dorsal scales, while the flanks are covered in finer scales. Its base coloration ranges from earthy brown to olive-grey, punctuated by occasional blue or black spots on the head and a bluish neck, while the belly is a clean whitish hue. Five or six V-shaped bands streak across its back, adding to its mosaic appearance. When it moves, the creature’s slow, deliberate gait has earned it the nickname “monkey lizard,” a nod to its unhurried locomotion that often leaves it vulnerable to a suite of predators, from spiders to primates. In the understory, it lies in ambush, snapping up insects and spiders, but it will also nibble on flowers and seeds, showcasing a surprisingly omnivorous palate that blurs the line between reptile and herbivore. Its presence in the layered canopy underscores a delicate balance between camouflage and predation, a dance that continues to intrigue every observer who catches a glimpse of its kaleidoscopic form.
