About the Banded Cat-Eyed Snake

The banded cat-eyed snake, Leptodeira annulata, is a slender, rear-fanged colubrid that reaches about 750 mm in total length. Its head is clearly set off from the neck, and its large eyes are framed by vertically elliptic pupils that give it a distinctive cat-like stare. The dorsal surface shimmers in shades of yellowish-brown, patterned with dark brown or black spots that often merge into an undulating, zig-zag stripe, a camouflage that blends seamlessly with the leaf litter and mossy bark of its forest home. This nocturnal hunter dwells in moist environments, from dry and wet forests to the edges of swamps, marshes, and riparian corridors, and even ventures into well-vegetated urban fringes where water is present. By night it climbs trees and scours the forest floor, hunting small amphibians, their eggs and tadpoles, as well as salamanders, lizards (including anoles), tiny snakes, fish, and occasionally fledgling birds. Its rear-positioned, grooved fangs deliver a mild venom that subdues prey but rarely harms humans, producing only a slight itching or swelling if a bite occurs. A surprising trait of this species is its reproductive link to ant colonies: eggs have been discovered within the fungus gardens of leaf-cutting ants of the genera Acromyrmex and Atta, suggesting a hidden ecological partnership that few reptiles share.
