• A mantled howler's roar travels 5 kilometres through dense rainforest — so loud it registers on seismographs designed to measure earthquakes. The sound comes from an enlarged hyoid bone in their throat that acts like a natural amplifier, allowing a 9-kilogram monkey to produce calls louder than a howling wolf. They howl at dawn to claim territory and warn rival troops to stay away, sometimes calling for over an hour without stopping. The acoustic advantage is real: troops can hear each other across miles of canopy that would swallow any other animal's voice.
• Male mantled howlers are rust-red with a dramatic cape of longer hair along their flanks and back — the 'mantle' that gives them their name. But females are entirely different: gold or olive-coloured with no mantle at all, making them look like a completely separate species. This extreme sexual dimorphism in appearance tells us that males evolved their showy coats and deeper voices purely to intimidate rivals, not to attract mates. • Mantled howlers ferment leaves in their stomach using a specialised multi-chambered digestive system that works like a cow's rumen — a trait they share with colobus monkeys in Africa, despite being separated by 30 million years of evolution. This bacterial fermentation extracts nutrients from toxic or low-quality leaves that would poison most other primates. They can eat leaves so poisonous they'd kill a human, turning the least nutritious part of the rainforest into fuel. The trade-off: digestion is so slow that seeds pass through them intact, making them accidental gardeners that scatter fruiting trees across miles of forest.
• Mantled howler troops numbering 6 to 15 individuals are run almost entirely by females, who choose which males stay or go and decide where the group travels and when they rest. A female's social rank — her mother's status, her own fighting ability — determines how many offspring she'll successfully raise, because only high-ranking females get access to the best feeding territories and the choice of mates.
