• Mandrills live in enormous, stable groups called hordes that can contain hundreds of individuals. At Lopé National Park in Gabon the average horde size was recorded at 620 animals, and some groups swelled to as many as 845 members, making them the largest cohesive primate gatherings known. One such horde of roughly 700 individuals occupied a home range of 182 km², and the animals typically travel about 2.4 km each day while foraging within that area.
• The male mandrill is the most sexually dimorphic primate and also the largest monkey species. Adult males measure between 70 and 95 cm from head to body and weigh 19-30 kg, whereas females are smaller at 55-70 cm and 10-15 kg, highlighting the stark size gap between the sexes. This pronounced dimorphism extends to the skull and teeth, with males possessing much larger canines that aid in competition for mates and resources.
• The mandrill's facial skin displays a striking blue hue that is not a pigment but a structural colour produced by parallel collagen fibres, while the vivid red patches come from blood vessels just beneath the skin. This combination creates a unique visual signal; the blue ridges on males contrast sharply with the red facial tones and the surrounding green foliage, making the male's face stand out to other mandrills.
• Only the top-ranking males show the most intense red-blue facial pattern and the fattest flanks, a combination that makes them stand out amid the green forest backdrop. This vivid display is linked to their superior status and directly increases their chances of siring offspring, as they dominate breeding opportunities. The blue skin is reinforced by ridged bone swellings, further enhancing the visual signal used in male competition.
