Fascinating facts about the Malachite

• A malachite butterfly's wings are not actually green — they're blue underneath, but millions of microscopic ridges on the wing surface bend light in a way that makes them glow emerald. Flip the wing over and the colour vanishes. This is structural colour, the same trick that makes oil slicks iridescent, and it's so efficient that the butterfly uses almost no pigment at all.
• Malachites are compulsive about their flight path. They patrol the same 50-metre stretch of rainforest stream, lap after lap, for hours each day — a behaviour called hilltopping. A single male may visit the identical perch 40 times in an afternoon. If a rival appears, they spiral upward in a death spiral that can reach 15 metres high before one surrenders.
• A malachite caterpillar feeds only on passion vines, plants that have evolved toxic compounds specifically to poison butterfly larvae. The malachite has evolved a matching toxin in its own body — it stores the plant's poison without harm and becomes poisonous itself. Predators learn quickly: a bird that eats one malachite caterpillar will refuse them for life.
• The malachite's proboscis — its drinking straw — is longer than its entire body and coils like a watch spring when not in use. It unrolls to sip nectar from flowers with narrow tubes, sometimes probing 20 flowers in a single minute without landing. This speed matters: a malachite burns through energy so fast it must feed constantly during daylight.
• Male malachites gather at muddy riverbanks by the hundreds, sometimes thousands, in a behaviour called puddling. They absorb dissolved minerals — sodium, nitrogen — that females cannot find in nectar alone. A puddle cloud of malachites looks like a living emerald slick, and it's not decoration: males that skip puddling produce sperm with half the fertility of well-fed rivals.
