• A Julia Heliconian butterfly can smell a passionflower plant from 100 metres away — and will refuse to lay eggs on any other plant, even ones that look identical. This extreme pickiness means their entire lifecycle depends on a single genus of host plant, making them invisible to gardeners who plant the wrong flowers. They've evolved such tight chemical recognition that their caterpillars can tolerate the plant's toxins, giving them a poison shield their predators learn to avoid.
• Unlike most butterflies that live 2–6 weeks, a Julia Heliconian survives 6 months in the wild — three times longer than related species. This extended lifespan is possible because they don't burn energy on endless mating binges; instead they roost at the same night perches for weeks, forming sleeping clusters that confuse predators.
