• A male frigatebird inflates a pouch under his throat to the size of a beach ball—bright red, translucent, and rippling like a water balloon—then sits perfectly still for hours waiting for a female to notice. He never eats or drinks during display season. Only females who see his pouch inflated will mate with him, making his appearance a full-time job for weeks.
• Frigatebirds have the lowest wing-loading of any bird on Earth: their wings span up to 2.3 metres while they weigh just 1.5 kilograms. They're so light and aerodynamic they can stay airborne for weeks without landing, riding thermal currents so efficiently they burn almost no energy gliding. Sailors used to think they never slept.
• Instead of hunting, frigatebirds are ocean pirates: they chase other seabirds mid-flight and harass them until they vomit up their catch, then pluck the regurgitated fish from the air before it hits water. A single frigatebird can force prey birds to cough up meals dozens of times a day. They've mastered theft as a survival strategy.
• A frigatebird chick takes longer to fledge than any other seabird—up to six months of dependency on its mother, the longest adolescence in the seabird world. The mother makes thousands of hunting trips, and once the chick fledges, she abandons it completely and won't breed again for two years. One chick every two years is the cost of raising such a slow-maturing youngster.
• Male frigatebirds sing while inflating their pouches, producing a machine-gun rattle that carries across the colony—a sound that combines drumming (they vibrate their throat pouch) with vocal calls. Females respond with specific head-flicking displays. Frigatebirds are one of the few seabirds with complex vocal and visual duet displays, turning courtship into a synchronized performance.
