• While most bats hunt flying insects mid-air, the little yellow-shouldered bat does something riskier: it plucks fruit straight from the tree while hovering, often in complete darkness. It remembers the exact location of every fruiting tree in its territory — some the size of a basketball court — and returns to them when they ripen. A single bat can visit 100 fruit trees in one night.
• The 'yellow shoulders' that name this bat aren't ornamental; they're a sign of sexual maturity in males, intensifying in colour during the breeding season to attract mates. The pigmentation contains carotenoids — the same compounds in human carrots — which the bat acquires only from ripe fruit. A brightly coloured male proves he's skilled enough to find premium food, a reliable signal of fitness to females.
• In tropical rainforests, Sturnira lilium is one of the primary seed dispersers for pioneer plants that colonise gaps left by fallen trees. A single bat can deposit seeds across 500 metres in one night, carrying fruit pulp in its digestive tract and dropping viable seeds in a line as it forages. Without these dispersal routes, rainforest gaps would take decades longer to regenerate, and the forest's recovery speed would drop by as much as 40 per cent.
• This species roosts in groups of up to 200 individuals inside hollow trees and caves, where they form stable colonies that can persist for decades in the same location. Each bat weighs roughly 12 grams — as much as three grains of rice — yet the colony produces enough guano to fertilise the forest floor below, creating nutrient hotspots that shape plant growth within a 20-metre radius.
