- Wood leopard moth caterpillars live inside tree trunks for two to three years before they finally emerge to pupate under the bark. During this hidden phase they chew tunnels through the wood of many deciduous trees, and olive trees are especially vulnerable. This prolonged, concealed feeding makes the species a stealthy threat to orchards and olive groves alike.
- Originally a European and Asian resident, the wood leopard moth now spans four continents. It inhabits most of Europe (except Ireland), stretches across northern Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and reaches into Asia from Japan to India. It was introduced to the northeastern United States before 1879, and today it is recorded in states as far apart as Maine, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.
- Fruit growers label the wood leopard moth a pest because its larvae gnaw into the branches of many fruit trees, weakening the wood and reducing yields. The caterpillars' xylophagous diet means they literally eat the tree from the inside, and the damage can be severe enough to kill the host.
- Adult wood leopard moths take to the air from June through September, timing their flight period to the warm months of their temperate homes. They are most often seen fluttering among woodlands, garden borders and orchard trees.
