• A tuft of hair at the end of their tail looks nothing like a lion's mane—it's more like a white pompom at the end of a rope. But that plume serves a real purpose: it's a flag that macaques wave when moving through dense rainforest, keeping troops of up to 20 individuals visually linked in the gloom where sound alone won't work. • They have cheek pouches that can hold as much food as their stomach—roughly the volume of a golf ball on each side. A macaque can stuff fruit and insects into these elastic pockets and move to a safer perch to eat later, a survival strategy in rainforests where spending time on the ground means meeting a leopard or tiger.
